Her father was Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. The family was raised by her parents in Wheaton (Illinois) and she graduated in 1981 from North High School of Wheaton. Before making the move into Los Angeles, she appeared in commercials for a number of companies. Her career O'Grady began her career as models for Montgomery Ward, and well having a number of commercials. She made her screen debut with the 1988 romantic comedy She's Having a Baby, and she was later cast in the recurring role of ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. In 1995, O'Grady was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in Drama Series together with the ensemble.
