O'Neil was a student at high school when she took part in 2005 for the 3rd Canadian Idol season. The judges were impressed with her singing and she was able to advance to the Top 100 Round. O'Neil received excellent praise from her judges. She suffered significant losses in the Top 10 and Top 9 weeks of the finals after she was placed into the bottom three and second-bottom two places and bottom two, respectively. The judges were stunned by this and advised the viewers to choose contestants similar to Melissa, who had the strongest singing skills. O'Neil wasn't in the top 3 after a series of consistently outstanding performance. With two other stunning performances on September 7, 2005, the day that O'Neil as well as Rex Goudie advanced to the competition's final two contestants, judge Werner reported that headlines in the morning papers will read: O'Neil defeated Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and also the most youthful winner in the competition's record . O'Neil was contacted by Canadian Premier Paul Martin congratulating her on the success of Canadian Idol right away.
